The problems You describe are exactly what the FSF warns about with proprietary solutions. So viruses, bloat, OEM spying (telemetry), nagware, and removal of included features with only paid replacements. Your only choice is whether or not to use this new system which duplicates the log notifications you had before, this time only on a new format.and with constant nag reminders that it's there, please switch over to it. Can't remove it, and this time can't stop it, either. Again, it may or may not do any telemetry. QNAP also added a Notification Center app, with who knows what background systems, in addition to the standard log reader. Your only option is to stop the app after every boot up or firmware upgrade. But no opt-out, and no possibility of removal. QNAP states that they want the SSD app in as default 'for convenience of automatic function if and when the customer adds an SSD to the NAS, increasing performance'. AND QNAP does NOT allow you to remove the app. The problem? SSD Profiler sends telemetry home to QNAP with no way to opt out of this. Over a year ago QNAP also added a new app, SSD Profiler, as default into the OS. They now make McAfee's plug-in app available for download, but don't bother to tell you before you upgrade that the new McAfee AV is paid subscription only, versus the prior included system. Last month, October 2019, reports started coming in that THOUSANDS, maybe multiple tens of thousands, of QNAP NAS drives have been infected with a QSnatch virus worldwideĭelete the built-in AV software from the OS, without much warning beyond a line item in the change log. I purchased, and administer, a QNAP NAS at work and although I like the hardware, which is why I made the purchase, I can longer recommend them and advise staying away.
